Are you amazed by some Toastmasters who have the simplest formula to achieving success? Robert Richert, DTM, and Nigel Blackwell, ACB, ALB, our very own Founder’s District members, inspire and show us how to triumph in conducting club matters as featured in the April 2011 Toastmaster International magazine. (Note: member login ID and password are required to access the current month's online magazine.)
1. How do we get passive members to engage more in meetings? According to Robert's “Fill Those Club Roles” article you need ME:
Method, Mentors, Mindset, Metamorphosis, Measuring Up, and Me–Ready.
Robert reminds us that “All of us can help encourage new or shy members and instill confidence in them by fostering an atmosphere in which anyone has a chance to win a ribbon.” And
“If the club atmosphere can resemble a rehearsal more than the ‘play’ it reduces the sense of intimidation.”
2. How do you get members to attend meetings more regularly or build up a club? According to Nigel, “If you feed them they will come.”
Nigel, a member of Le Gourmet Club, tells us the winning formula is as old as Shakespearean days – Conduct the Scrumptious Symphony.
In Nigel's article “Dinner Club Celebrates Eating and Oratory” he logically points out that if you combine the biological eating imperative with the societal norm of the sharing of food then a Toastmaster does not have much choice left – “The sense of bonding and club community is strengthened when people break bread together.”
Hats off to Robert and Nigel for inspiring the leader and communicator in all of us.
