The 2005 Founder’s District Fall Conference was held at the Phoenix Club on Saturday, October 29. District Governor Ken Sisco, selected the Honorable Eileen C. Moore for the Communication and Leadership Award presented at the luncheon event. Justice Moore is serving as Associate Justice for the California Court of Appeal, for the Fourth District, in Santa Ana. She has been honored twice by the Orange County Board of Supervisors for her service as Chair of the Orange County Family Violence Council. Justice Moore has earned many honors and awards qualifying her for the recognition at our conference. For additional information on her, please refer to our press release.
The evening contests were a clear demonstration of the talents in Founder’s District. The Evaluation contest began with the speech “Here I Am—There You Are,” delivered by Pat Newman. Although she has been a member for only a few months, Newman challenged the evaluators competing to become the 2005-2006 Best Evaluator in Founder’s District. All eight divisions were well represented by Ray Brooks, Tim Campbell, Trevor D’Sousa, Meera Manek, Cap Poore, Laura Scott, Judy Tejwani, and James Tieman. The top honors were given to Laura Scott from Psomas Speakers Club 1952 in Division A, as first place winner and to James Tieman from OCCN Speakers Forum Club 9377 in Division F, as runner-up.
The Humorous contest followed and was one of the true funny experiences at the District. Once again the eight divisions were represented by Tim Campbell, Steve Chen, John Hendrick, R. Kent Jones, Irene Kay, Lloyd Nakano, Clifford Shimizu and Manuel Urrizola. All the contestants kept the audience in stitches. The first place winner, Manuel Urrizola, “Have I Got a Deal for You” explained the true objectives of the beginning manual. Manuel is a member of Zotspeak, Club 9524 in Division F. The runner-up, Cliff Shimizu, was a close second and shared his experience of going to the Region contest in Burbank. Cliff belongs to the Unimasters Club 9661 in Division G.
The evening was well spent with all the winners who dared to compete and offered
members challenges to join them at the next conference on April 29, 2006.
